The 8 best gothic visual novels

Short answer

The best gothic visual novels are The House in Fata Morgana, the closest thing the genre has to a pure gothic tale, and Umineko When They Cry, a family murder mystery on a private island. Higurashi, Tsukihime, Raging Loop, Paranormasight, The Letter and Slay the Princess each take the same ingredients somewhere different.

What makes a visual novel gothic?

Gothic is not the same as horror. A horror game wants to frighten you now. A gothic story wants you to feel that the past has not finished with this place. We looked for four things:

  • A place with a memory: a mansion, an island, a village, a building that has outlived its purpose.
  • Isolation: a storm, snow, mist or a road that closes, so nobody can simply leave.
  • A buried secret: usually a family's, and usually older than the people now paying for it.
  • Dread over shock: slow unease, with beauty and sorrow in the mix.

Visual novels suit this well. Long text can build atmosphere patiently, and still images let an old house simply sit there and watch you.

Disclosure. Seiruna Media makes Midnight Guest. It is not counted in this list and appears separately below.

The eight games

1The House in Fata Morgana

Novectacle · 2012 · English since 2016 · rated 17+ on iOS

You wake as an amnesiac spirit in a mansion, and a maid shows you the tragedies that happened there through episodes set in different centuries. Love, betrayal and despair repeat from door to door until the house's own story comes out. The Switch version holds a 96 on Metacritic. If you read one game on this list, read this one.

It is on iOS through Crunchyroll, which requires a paid membership.

2Umineko When They Cry

07th Expansion · 2007 · English on Steam and GOG, 2016 to 2017

A wealthy family gathers on the private island of Rokkenjima in 1986, a typhoon cuts them off, and the murders begin, apparently the work of a witch. The real question is whether the crimes can be solved by human means at all. It is split into Question and Answer arcs and it is very long.

3Higurashi When They Cry

07th Expansion · 2002 · English since 2009 · psychological and supernatural horror

The rural branch of the gothic: a village, a festival and a curse tied to it. Hinamizawa looks harmless for hours, and the slow slide from comedy to paranoia is the point. It can be very violent, so check the content warnings before you start.

4Tsukihime

Type-Moon · 2000 · English remake since 2024 on PS4 and Switch

Vampires in a modern city, and a boy who returns to an old family mansion with rules he does not understand. It is more urban fantasy than classic gothic, but the old house and the family secrets are very much in place. The remake, A Piece of Blue Glass Moon, is the version to buy in English.

5Raging Loop

Kemco · 2015 · English since 2019 · rated 17+ on iOS

Mist closes off the mountain village of Yasumizu for a ritual called the Feast, and a werewolf hides among the villagers. The hero keeps dying and returning, and each loop reveals more of what the village has been hiding. Its social deduction structure makes it the most game-like choice here, with deep roots in Japanese folklore.

6Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo

Square Enix · 2023 · iOS, Android, PC, Switch

A horror mystery in 1980s Tokyo, built on real local ghost stories about the Honjo district. Several people hold curses and want to use them, and you move between their viewpoints. A sequel, The Mermaid's Curse, moves to an island in Ise Bay with its own legends. Both are good first reads on a phone.

7The Letter

Yangyang Mobile · 2017 · PC and iOS · rated 17+ on iOS

Seven characters fall under a curse that has haunted the Ermengarde Mansion for centuries. The inspiration is Asian horror cinema, particularly Ju-On: The Grudge and The Ring, and your choices decide who survives. It is free to download on iOS, which makes it the lowest-risk way to try the genre.

8Slay the Princess

Black Tabby Games · 2023 · PC, consoles · Metacritic 90

A voice tells you to go to a cabin in the woods and kill the princess in its basement. It should not work as gothic, yet it does, because the place keeps changing according to what you believe about her. It uses hand-drawn pencil art rather than pixels, and it had sold over a million copies by February 2026. We did not find it on the App Store.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gothic and horror visual novels?

Horror aims to frighten you in the moment. Gothic stories focus on atmosphere, isolation and a past that will not stay buried, often in an old house or family. Many visual novels are both.

Which gothic visual novel should I read first?

The House in Fata Morgana is the classic recommendation. If you want something shorter or cheaper to start with, The Letter is free to download on iOS and Paranormasight is a self-contained mystery.

Are there gothic visual novels on iPhone?

Yes. The House in Fata Morgana, Raging Loop, Paranormasight and The Letter were all on the US App Store when we checked in November 2026. Midnight Guest is coming soon.

Are these games suitable for teenagers?

Check each rating first. Most are aimed at older players and include death and violence. On the US App Store The House in Fata Morgana, Raging Loop, Paranormasight and The Letter are rated 17+. Midnight Guest is rated 16+.
