How we checked

Many lists of mobile visual novels are years old and recommend games that have since left the store. We looked up every game below in the US App Store on 4 November 2026. Prices and ratings come from those listings and can change, and other countries may differ.

1The House in Fata Morgana

Gothic drama · Crunchyroll Mega or Ultimate Fan membership required

A spirit with no memory wakes in a decaying mansion and walks through its tragedies, one era at a time. It is widely held to be among the best visual novels ever written. The download is free, but you need a paid Crunchyroll membership to play. It heads our gothic list too.

2Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo

Horror mystery · Square Enix · one purchase

Curses and local ghost stories in 1980s Tokyo. It launched on iOS the same day as on PC, so the phone version is no afterthought. The sequel, listed as Paranormasight: TMC, costs $17.49 and requires iOS 18.

3Ace Attorney Trilogy

Courtroom adventure · Capcom · one purchase

All 14 episodes of the first three Phoenix Wright games. You collect evidence and press witnesses until a contradiction appears. It plays closer to a puzzle game than most entries here, and it is the game that first brought many English speakers to the genre.

4Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

Murder mystery · Spike Chunsoft · one purchase

Students are locked in a school and told they can only leave by getting away with murder. Trials mix argument with action sequences. It is the largest download here at 3.6 GB. Two sequels and a spin-off are also on the store.

5STEINS;GATE

Science fiction · Crunchyroll membership required

Friends discover that a modified microwave can send messages to the past, and it goes badly. It is a long, tightly built time-travel thriller from 5pb. and Nitroplus, and it is the recommendation here for anyone who prefers science fiction to the supernatural.

6Raging Loop

Folk horror · Crunchyroll membership required

A werewolf-style deduction game inside a time loop, set in a misted mountain village. Knowledge carries over when you die, so each loop gets sharper and more unsettling.

7Doki Doki Literature Club

Psychological horror · Serenity Forge · free download

It looks like a cheerful school romance. It is not. The 17+ rating is there for a reason, as the story deals with self-harm and suicide, so read the warning before you start. The official mobile version reached the App Store in December 2025.

8The Letter

Horror drama · free download

Seven characters, a cursed mansion and choices that decide who survives. It has the smallest download here. The listing was last updated in 2021, so check that it runs on your device.

9Everlasting Summer

Romance and mystery · free download

A man falls asleep on a winter bus and wakes in a summer camp, with no idea why. It began as a Russian indie project and has been on the App Store since 2015. It has a warm, nostalgic mood, though its 17+ rating is worth noting.

10Ghost Trick

Puzzle adventure · Capcom · free to download, purchase in app

The one stretch on this list. It is more of a puzzle game than a visual novel, but it comes from Ace Attorney creator Shu Takumi, and its story of one night and one lost memory will appeal to anyone who likes the genre.

What is not on the App Store

We searched the US store for several games people often ask about and did not find English versions of VA-11 Hall-A, Slay the Princess, Tsukihime, Higurashi or Umineko. The English iOS version of Banshee's Last Cry from 2014 did not come up either. These are better read on PC or console. Our list of retro visual novels covers where to find several of them.

What to look for in a mobile visual novel

• How you pay. One purchase, a subscription, or a free game with paid "gems" for choices are very different deals. The last kind can make a story cost far more than a one-off game.
• Reading tools. Rollback, text history, skip and auto-advance matter more on a phone, where you read in short bursts.
• Save anywhere. You will be interrupted. The game should cope.
• Offline play. Useful on a plane or the metro. Check the listing, especially for subscription games.
• Storage. Downloads above range from about 300 MB to well over 3 GB.

The Letter, Everlasting Summer and Doki Doki Literature Club are all free to download on the US App Store and all rated 17+. Check each listing for in-app purchases.

Are there visual novels on iOS without in-app purchases?

Yes. Midnight Guest will be one purchase with no in-app purchases or ads. Paranormasight, Ace Attorney Trilogy and Danganronpa are also sold at a one-off price; check each listing for optional extras.

Do the Crunchyroll visual novels cost extra?

The apps are free to download, but their listings say a Crunchyroll Mega Fan or Ultimate Fan membership is required to play.

Is Midnight Guest available now?

Not yet. Midnight Guest is coming soon to the App Store for iPhone and iPad. It will be English only and is rated 16+.
