The 10 best retro visual novels you can play in English
The best retro visual novels you can still play in English are Famicom Detective Club, YU-NO, Kanon, Tsukihime, Higurashi When They Cry, Ever17 and Clannad from the classic era, plus VA-11 Hall-A, Urban Myth Dissolution Center and Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog among modern games built in the old style.

How we chose these ten
Lists of classic visual novels often recommend games that were never released in English. We used three tests instead:
- The game has an official English version, not only a fan patch.
- You can buy it for a current system or PC. We checked release information in November 2026, and availability can vary by region.
- It either comes from the classic era, 1988 to 2004, or was deliberately built to look and read like that era.
The list runs in order of first release, because a ranking would mostly measure taste. A 1988 detective story and a 2016 bartending game are not competing for the same evening.
Disclosure. Seiruna Media makes Midnight Guest. It is not counted in this list and appears separately below.

The classics, 1988 to 2004
1Famicom Detective Club
Nintendo · 1988 and 1989 · remade for Switch in 2021
Two linked murder mysteries, The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind, first released on the Family Computer Disk System in Japan. The originals never had an official English release. The Switch remakes reached the world in May 2021 with Japanese voices and English subtitles.
The remakes replace the old art, so come here for the structure and pacing of 1980s mystery writing rather than for the pixels.
2YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of This World
ELF · 1996 on the PC-98 · remake in English since 2019
Designed by Hiroyuki Kanno, YU-NO made branching itself the game. Its Auto Diverge Mapping System shows parallel storylines as a map, and you use jewel saves to return to earlier branch points. The 2017 remake reached Windows, Switch and PS4 in English in October 2019.

3Kanon
Key · 1999 · English on Steam since June 2024, on Switch since 2025
A romance with supernatural undertones, set in a city that stays under snow for the whole story. Kanon helped make the novel-style format the standard for romance games, and it waited 25 years for an official English version. Its follow-up Air (2000) reached Steam in English in March 2025.
The original was an adult game, so check the rating of the edition you buy.
4Tsukihime
Type-Moon · 2000 · remake in English since June 2024
Type-Moon first sold Tsukihime at Winter Comiket in December 2000. The official English version is the remake, A Piece of Blue Glass Moon, released worldwide on PS4 and Switch in 2024, which moves the story from 1999 to 2014. A second part, The Other Side of Red Garden, has no English date yet.
Expect a long read about vampires, old families and a boy who can see how things break.
5Higurashi When They Cry
07th Expansion · 2002 · English since 2009, on Steam since 2015
A village festival in June 1983, a supposed curse, and a story that loops through alternate timelines until you start to suspect the friendly cast. Higurashi is a sound novel at heart: static sprites, on-screen text, and sound doing most of the frightening. MangaGamer finished the Steam release in November 2023.
6Ever17: The Out of Infinity
KID · 2002 · English in 2005, remaster in March 2025
Trapped in LeMU, an underwater theme park 51 meters below an artificial island, seven people count down the hours before it collapses. Hirameki International published the English version in 2005, one of the early Japanese visual novels officially sold in the West. It is best read knowing as little as possible.
7Clannad
Key · 2004 · English on Steam since November 2015
Clannad was the best-selling PC game in Japan when it came out, with over 100,000 copies of the Windows version sold that year. It is a long drama with six main plotlines, and its reputation rests on how much it asks you to care about ordinary family life. Sekai Project published the English Steam version in 2015.
Modern games with a retro heart
8VA-11 Hall-A
Sukeban Games · 2016 · PC, then Vita, Switch and PS4
You mix drinks in a cyberpunk bar and listen. The developers drew on old PC-98 games, with Redzone's X-Girl: Cyber Punk Adventure as the blueprint for the look. It is the game that introduced many Western players to that style. It is not on iOS, though the studio has mentioned considering a version.
9Urban Myth Dissolution Center
Published by Shueisha Games · February 2025 · PC, Switch, PS5
A mystery adventure about investigating urban legends, drawn with pixel-based characters and backgrounds. It is closer to a modern detective game in how it plays, but it shows how well low-resolution art suits the occult.
10Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog
Space Colony Studios · February 2025 · PC, Switch, PS4, PS5
The strictest revival on this list: a science-fiction story that recreates late-1980s PC-9800 adventure games, down to how text appears and how the effects behave. It began as a green-only game, and a full-color mode was added before release. PC Gamer's review explains why that restraint works.
